Question of the month:

Hi I would like to set some security features to my sites but when I'm going to Tools > Security The Security "link" is not clickable it's not highlighted (like this feature doesn't work) is there any way to enable this, I can't set nay permissions to my site. Andy

Answer:

This problem usually occurs because you are authoring your web site on Win9x computer. In order for this option to be available, you need to have a protected file system such as NTFS. If you want to access this option in FrontPage, you must open your remote web site in FrontPage by clicking File > Open Web and then inserting your web site URL into the Folder Name box.

Be advised that this option may not be what you think it is! You cannot use this to protect individual files, only sub webs. And, on NT servers, you do not have the option of adding new users via this dialog box.

A Tip or Two:

  1. If you are using the search component and want to hide certain documents from the search results you have two options: a) create a folder that begins with an underscore "_" and put the content you don't want searched in it. b) put the content in a sub web.
  2. If you are using the search component and publish your web to an NT/IIS server with Index Server, you can open the site live from the web server and get more available options in the search component properties.
