My Online Directory is an Active Server Pages (ASP) application that utilizes a combination of ASP code, FrontPage Database Results Regions and an Access database for collecting, viewing and securing a directory of information about people. This application has many other uses as well such as a web page directory, business directory, real estate directory, etc..

By default, all the pages in the directory are password protected using the same password protection example you can find on our web site. Following is a brief list of the pages included with this application and their function. We have removed the password protection from the directory viewing page and populated it with fictitious names so you can see how it works. For the rest of the pages, we have provided screen shots so you can see what they look like.

Default.asp - This is the home page of the directory that displays the records in the database. It is set up for paging and also allows users to sort by last name simply by clicking a letter at the top of the page. At the bottom of the page, users will see the "Edit Your Listing" link. The resulting page (discussed below), allows that user to update their information.

Edit.asp - This is a form page that checks the credentials of the logged in user (passed in session variables after the user logs in) and allows them to update their listing. The form is pre-populated with the information currently in the directory. The nice thing about this is that you won't have to keep users records updated yourself! And, if they forget their password, the system is automated to handle that as well.

Login.asp - This is the page users are shown when they first browse to the site. Your links should always point to default.asp. If the users are not logged in, the application notes the page they were headed to, forces a log in and then takes them back to the original page they wanted so there is no extra clicking on the part of the user.

Loginvalidation.asp - This page checks the users credentials against the database. If they enter the wrong information, a message will be displayed telling them. If the information is correct, the sessions variables are created and they are passed to the page they originally requested.

Logoff.asp - Simply allows the user to log out of the application by killing their session variables. No screen shot because there's not much to show.

Mailpass1.htm - This is simply a form where users can enter their email address if they have forgotten their password. The form passes the address to the next page.

Mailpass.asp - This page takes the passed email address and checks the database for it. If found in the database, the application gets the corresponding password and emails it to that address. So even if someone knew the address of a registered user, they couldn't get their password unless they had access to that users email account as well.

Memberinput.asp - This is the administrators page that allows you to enter new members. It has an extra layer of security in that it is looking not only for a users session variables but also for a specific user/password pair - yours.

Pasprotect.inc - This is include page is placed at the top of each ASP page you want to protect. It checks for the users login session. If not found, they are redirected to the login page.
